Another Reason Why I Love the Class Plants and People

Right now we are covering the topic of herbs and spices, and our professor informed us of the reason why garlic is considered something that can ward off vampires. In Transylvania, present-day Romania, there was a higher percentage of people with a recessive allele that caused a deficiency in collagen formation. When their bone structures grew, the skin with its lack of elasticity would pull back, exposing the teeth and making finger nails look longer. This recessive allele also caused a hypersensitivity to sunlight and . . . the volatile compounds of garlic.

Interesting, huh?

Oh, and onions cause people to cry because the sulfur compounds secreted by the onion dissipate in the air and then react with the water on your eyes and form sulfuric acid. Ouch, no wonder chopping onions is painful.

Enjoy the warmer weather, longer days, and have a great weekend!
